Born in Freedom, PA., MMicky Shine was raised in New York City
and began his life-long interest in mmusic during his attendance at Port Richmond high
school. Through the guidance of his mmusically and artistically
talented uncle, Leonard Trerotola, Shine studied percussion and
auditioned successfully for the high school band under the direction of
Mr. Robert Kirchner.
Shine began his professional mmusic career at the age of
16, playing for local bands and subsequently going on the road at the
age of 18 with Jo Ann Campbell and Troy Seals. He attended the Manhattan
School of Music and also studied with Metropolitan Opera principal
percussionist, Abe Marcus. After enlisting in the army he was assigned
to the Armed Forces Music School in Norfolk, Virginia. Shine performed
with the 328th U.S. Army band in Brooklyn and studied with percussionist
Billy Cobham, also an Army bandsman. Shines tutelage during this time
also included work with Johnny Carson's Tonight Show drummer, Ed
Shaughnessey.
After a number of years finessing his percussive talents
while often playing with several bands simultaneously, Shine became the
drummer for the San Francisco cult band, Clover. With Clover he became
known not only for his tasteful playing but also for his hard-driving
rock and roll style. He has toured and performed with such outstanding
artists as Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat, The Atlanta Rhythm
Section, Alice Cooper and many others' work that earned him several
Silver, Gold and Platinum recordings, including Elvis Costello's
recording, 'My Aim is True.' After Clover, Shine joined the Tommy Tutone
band and continued to build an impressive repertoire of work, including
another recording as well as touring on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Damn the Torpedo's tour. Remaining open to all interesting
situations, he also performed Broadway shows including Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hair, Anything Goes, The Music Man and
You're a Good Man Charley Brown. He has also appeared with the City
Symphony Orchestra of New York as well as many local music
organisations.
Since 1994 Shine has had a residence on the Cheyenne
River Sioux Reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, USA. Originally
drawn there by his involvement with Habitat for Humanity, Shine stayed
on after his initial involvement with the Jimmy Carter Work Project to
seek another direction for his creativity. In that time, he has built
his own home (he is also an accomplished carpenter), and created over
450 original works of art and mmusic. One of those works has been
developed into a community mural painting project titled, "MMusic &
MMedicine for Healing". To date there have been three installations of
this piece.
As part of his ongoing efforts to bring the understanding
of mmusic to wider audiences, Shine has recently completed a 17 inch frieze
in book form titled; Listen Too This Book. From 2000 to the present Shine has been the subject of
various segments for NPR and PBS programs which feature his current work
and retrospectives of his life as well as in depth interviews.
Shine has been a resident artist in Pittsburgh, PA., San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, CA., Roseburg, Or., as well as the
Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan areas. He has taught art as part of a
stARTwork outreach program with the Ann Arbor Art Cars project, worked
with teens housed at the W. J Maxey Boys Training School in Whitmore
Lake, MI., The Elk Grove CA. Art Council’s program for High School
seniors and continues working with youth and adult programs nationwide.
